Arctic Glaze Ltd install over 180 Secondary Glazed units for a £25 million renovation project for Great Ormond Street
Founded in 1884 by Commendator Giovanni Batista Ortelli, the Italian Hospital is a grade II listed building which is part of Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital.
Working on the large renovation project, Arctic Glaze has successfully delivered a thermally efficient installation of over 180 secondary glazed units. The installation has provided warm treatment rooms and soundproof facilities to conduct children's hearing tests.
Period properties like the Italian Hospital which showcase their original single glazing often encounter poor acoustic and thermal insulation. The addition of aluminium bespoke secondary glazing with 6.4mm Pilkington K glass has substantially reduced noise entering the building while decreasing heat loss and reducing heating costs.
Arctic Glaze installed on behalf of Granada Glazing who are the UK’s leading manufacturer of aluminium secondary glazing. Granada Glazing contracted Arctic Glaze to survey, install and project manage the large renovation project.
With no transoms or mullions to spoil the view, our Heritage hinged secondary glazing provide a truly unobtrusive glazing system. They retain the character of your existing primary windows whilst delivering great acoustic performance and enhanced thermal efficiency.
Hinged units provide a practical solution to treat historic buildings as they are easy to operate and blend in seamlessly to match the room aesthetic. To treat the tall windows, Arctic Glaze recommended the installation of stacked hinged units. In addition, the secondary glazed system was installed with a bespoke gearing function to operate the integral blinds located behind the secondary glazing.
To prevent unauthorised access to the primary windows a removable handle (Actuator Handle) was installed, this handle was given to authorised personal to allow them to open and close the secondary glazed system.
“Managing large projects requires time and knowledge, as secondary glazing specialists we can help architects and contractors specify a system that will increase both acoustic and thermal insulation. ”
